Maternity Photography Outfit Guide | Bay of Plenty Maternity Photographer RM PHOTO
When it comes to natural-feeling maternity photos, what you wear really shapes how your images feel. The right outfit helps show off your bump whilst still being flattering when we add some movement, keeping the focus on creating natural feeling photos.
Here’s what I love to see my maternity clients wear and why it works so well in photos.
FLOWY DRESS THAT MOVES WITH YOU
You can’t go wrong with a flowy dress. Alot of mums get scared of a flowy dress because they feel it loses their body shape and bump and can appear unflattering. BUT TRUST ME - flowy dresses are BEST because when we add movement or hands on the bump it shows off the bump in all the right places whilst skimming everything else (SUPER FLATTERING).
Choose lightweight fabrics like cotton, linen, or chiffon, and avoid anything too stiff. Soft, muted colours or earthy tones work beautifully outdoors, basically in the tones you see within nature or the location we're shooting at - browns, creams, soft muted colours always photograph amazingly.
RELAXED FIT JEANS OR LINEN PANTS
This combo is relaxed and easy. And it can be done so many different ways.
Loose-fitting baggy jeans are best (avoid skinny jeans). Baggy jeans help give a relaxed feel and are more flattering with movement and relaxed positioning.
You can pair jeans with a fitted shirt, singlet, bikini top, bralette or oversized shirt slightly open to show off your bump.
Over the cooler months a knit cardigan buttoned up or a cozy jersey tucked up under the boobs with the belly peeking out also photographs well if you want more of a simple + relaxed vibe to your photos.
Perfect if dresses aren’t your thing or you want a mix of casual and bare bump images.
SKIRT + TOP COMBO
A skirt and fitted top is a simple way to show off your bump without wearing a dress.
Choose skirts with a thicker stretchy waistband and in a fabric that moves freely (not stiff). I have a few in the client wardrobe you can check out - but basically a skirt paired with a cropped or tucked-in top highlights your bump and creates a clean, flattering silhouette.
Soft fabrics and neutral tones work best, and flowy skirts add a bit of movement without being over the top.
BARE BUMP + PARTIALLY NUDE MATERNITY PHOTOS
Now i know this isn't for everyone, and that’s the point.
This is for mums who want something a bit different; we strip back in your underwear so you can remember the bump in all it's glory.
We can use fabric, drapes, or props if you want, but mostly it’s about capturing the bump and curves you’ve got right now because believe it or not - you look blimmen amazing!!!
